Discover the History of Wetaskiwin, Alberta and Area
The Heritage Museum, located in the heart of Wetaskiwin's historic downtown, has been preserving local history since 1986. The museum currently offers three-floors of exhibits relating to everything from First Nations' history to the War Years! Learn about Wetaskiwin's early businesses, read about the extraordinary Women of Aspenland, see an authentic tipi, and have a glimpse of life on a Hutterite colony. And now you can explore local history through modern technology. Find out more by visiting the Heritage Museum today!
NOW OPEN...Wetaskiwin Origins Exhibit
The much anticipated Origins Exhibit is now open! See dinosaur fossils, archaeological artefacts, and learn about the local Cree Nations of Samson, Ermineskin, Montana, and Louis Bull. A fur trading post and a tipi are also included in the exhibit. And try playing our new Interactive Games, where you can learn about Cree migration, bison, and fur trading!
And, after two years of research and more than 250 hours of exhibit design work, visitors are now welcome to explore the new "virtual" exhibit devoted to twenty-five Community Halls from the County of Wetaskiwin! Read the halls' histories and view hundreds of pictures on a new touchscreen computer.
The Star Store
In 1903, John West built a two story brick building west of the site of his old store, The Pioneer Store. The Star Trading Co. general store opened in November. It became better known as the Star Store, operated by E.D. McLaughlin, W.W. Sharpe & R.B. Price.
The Wetaskiwin and District Heritage Museum has just had a replica star painted on the side of their building, commemorating the star used on the Star Trading Co. General store and later the Montgomery Store. Visit the museum today for the full history!
