About Wetaskiwin Heritage Museum

History

The Wetaskiwin and District Heritage Museum has been incorporated as a non-profit society since May 1986. The museum provides for the acquisition, exhibition, and preservation of artefacts to interpret the natural, human, and cultural history of Wetaskiwin, the Four Band Reserve, and the surrounding rural area. With the commitment of Society members, competent staff, dedicated volunteers, and the unfailing support of the community, the museum has become the city's heritage house, preserving its history for future generations.

Museum Facility

The Wetaskiwin and District Heritage
Museum, Front of the MuseumThe Heritage Museum is located in the heart of Wetaskiwin's historic downtown. In 2004, having outgrown the Calgary Power building, the Wetaskiwin and District Museum Society purchased the three-floor, one hundred-year-old Montgomery Store building situated on Main Street. The main floor opened in November 2004. The entire building, home to a collection of more than 15,000 artefacts, officially opened its doors on May 7th, 2005, and now welcomes thousands of visitors each year. The museum has also incorporated a gift shop, Timely Treasures, as well as a Resource Library.

Museum Exhibits

The acclaimed Children's Legacy Centre is located on the lower floor, where young visitors are invited to gently handle artefacts as they explore pioneer life through a child-size school, general store, country home, and backyard.
The main floor features alternating displays, as well as the Women of Aspenland permanent exhibit, which honours the accomplishments of four local women each year. Each year the stories of these remarkable women are set in our permanent, ongoing exhibit, so that their stories can be read years from now.
Permanent exhibits are located on the second floor. Highlights include The War Years Remembered, Wetaskiwin's Early Businesses, a display of twenty-eight churches, the history of Wetaskiwin's hospitals, exhibits showcasing the experiences of Chinese and Swedish immigrants, an exclusive Hutterite exhibit, and much more. The second floor is also home to the new Origins Exhibit featuring dinosaur fossils, an authentic tipi, a fur trade post, and interactive computer games!
Off-site exhibits are also available to the public. You can view artefacts on display in the long term care wing of the Wetaskiwin Hospital, at the County Office, and at City Hall.

School Tours

Dozens of school groups tour the museum each year, utilizing programming specifically designed to enhance Alberta's Social Studies curriculum. Seniors' tours and large groups are welcome to contact the museum in advance to make convenient arrangements.
